Is there any chance of any kind of reaction between gamma butyro lactone (GBL) with Triethylamine (TEA)? In a very old paper I found that butenolides dimerize in presence of base, though GBL is a saturated butenolides.

More information can be helpful... some batches of Et3N can have minute quantities of some impurities, these can react with GBL. If your solvent is, say MeOH (:-)...) lactone ring may be opening, etc. etc... so, details do matter.

In general lactone can undergo ring openning with some solvents contain water or even if it left at RT in an openning container for long time.
