Greetings you....
I am from Geology background. My work focuses on chemical substances of marine sediments and water (Heavy metals from the sediments of the coast, No. of species present in particular quantity of sediment...etc.). I do not have a lot of experience with statistical analysis and trying to submit pictorial representation effectively in my manuscripts. I want to try with Opensource Software. Is somebody proficient in statistics to give some suggestion.

One option for open source (free) statistical analysis and data visualization software is R. Please note that R is command-line-driven software, so if you don't have any coding background it will take time and effort to learn. Here is some more information: http://rtutorialseries.blogspot.com/2009/10/r-tutorial-series-introduction-to-r_11.html Also, regardless of the software you use, it's just a tool, it's not magic. You have to learn the fundamental statistics first.
Firstly, I agree with Brian with R for statistics analysis. Moreover, the Rcmdr package (which I'm not using) may help you if you don't feel easy with command-line.
