The research by Nicole Apelian comes to mind. If you haven't read her dissertation, I would suggest you do:  "Restorative Ecotourism as a Solution to Intergenerational  Knowledge Retention: An Exploratory Study with Two Communities in San Bushman Botswana."  Hope this proves helpful. Good luck!

I believe that understanding the principles of ecotourism, from its origins (Carlos Ceballos-Lascuraín 1986) to current trends, issues and coinstraints (Carter 2006, Martha Honey 2008, Ralph Buckley 2004-2012) will give you a good picture of what to measure. As any other tourism activity, ecotourism can be measure quantitatively in terms of profits from visitors, etc. Or you can use  surveys, and/or interviews to ecotourism stakeholders, ecotourism government officials, and guests at the ecotourism destinations to understand what an ecotourism shlould be made of.

I just ran across an article by David Zucchino 'What Ecotourism Should Be" (2011) that describes work done by Lonna and Richard Harkrader with a community in Nicaragua.

The project involves an organic coffee farm and ecotourism lodge referred to as Finca Experanza Verde.  Here's the link to their website:
