My colleague compressed an alumina powder with a ~20 tons press. Can the surface area show a high decline?
There is no significant reduction rather it will lead to increase in turnover effect due. The increase in TOE is always due to the increase in pore density as a result of pellet formation which will create increased contact time compared to when the cat is in powder for. unless the contact time required for the reaction is minimally low compared to the residence/contact in the solid pore. This is significant in gas solid reaction.
Pelleting inorganic materials we have never observed decreases in specific suface area.
If it happends you have to consider same factors:
- changes in the chemical composition,
- changes in the crystal structure,
- presence of closed empty spaces inside the tablet.
The last factor could be the most probable. You can verify by testing crashed pellets.
