Dow Jones sustainability index is already well accepted in companies. Please read the the paper on "Ecosilient Index" in 'Journal of Cleaner Production' also.
There are no ready formula or indexes for what you want. You have to work for it and work hard. Sustainability assessment is a long, strenuous but rewarding process.Indeed, But ... no pain, no gain.
If you are interested, I can send you a couple of papers that deal with the concurrent assessment of Sustainability in terms of Environmental, Economical and Social performance. Just ask.
In the meantime, you can find many helpful insights in the GRI G4 Sustainability Reporting Guidelines (https://www.globalreporting.org/standards/g4/Pages/default.aspx) that enable organizations to report the sustainability and related information that matters.
This is indeed a very interesting question and very much relevant to my phd work as well as I myself have strived to give a sustainability assessment framework for turning process using empirical relations. However, in the first stance, I also had tried my best to get any formula so that a generalised sustainability assessment scenario can be evaluated but in due course of time, I have learnt that there can never be any general formula for sustainability as far as I believe and may be I can be wrong even but sustainability is context based scenario with ever-changing list of dimensions and included indicators from one domain to other may it be manufacturing; services; etc. If I say that in initial days, it was only economic dimension which was usually considered and with the passage of time, the environmental issues started being considered and same is the case with social dimension. However, if I consider a hypothetical scenario, wherein we have such a advanced technology leading to almost negligible threat to environment, so will the environmental dimension matter much since, it is already being taken care of well by technology. Moreover, the role of government agencies has been found to have predominant role in implementing sustainability initiatives, thus will it not be necessary to have a framework for assessing the role of government in implementing sustainability initiatives may it be in any domain. Hence, what I have realised is that it will be more useful to have a generalised framework instead of particular formula for sustainability assessment which can accommodate "n" number of dimensions and their "n" number of indicators which can however change with time but the framework should be flexible enough to incorporate the change in issues and yet give a sustainable score. Further, I believe that sustainability can be better calculated in a relative manner by considering few scenarios at a time for which I have utilised Grey Relational Analysis to prepare a sustainability assessment framework for turning process being the focus of my study and obtaining score for each of economic, environmental and social dimensions.
I have simply shared my experience while preparing sustainability assessment framework. However, I shall be grateful to all, if anyone else can also suggest a better mode of preparing the sustainability framework.
You can check SPeaR by ARUP . It is a software to check sustainability and one can add and delete no: of indicators as required in a particular context and see various links between process or various indicators graphically and analyse strength and weakness of different parameters or coomparative evaluation of two schemes.
Sustainability index is an individualistic parameter. and i think till date, the topic has not yet reached to a maturity stage and hence, a universal framework is ye to be developed which can be applied to all activites and processes.
Hello, I believe my current paper published in journal of cleaner production would help you so much: "Towards sustainability assessment of machining process"
