A lot of research has been done, and you'll find a lot when searching for 'Cheiloscopy', which is the study of lip prints. It appears that many colleagues in India try to establish it as biometric tool, just check the latest JFDS publications (http://www.jfds.org/showBackIssue.asp?issn=0975-1475;year=2014;volume=6;issue=1;month=January-April)
Here's a relatively recent overview article: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3296377/
The cheiloscopy is a very useful tool under the right circumstances, but I think not a good candidate as "biometric too"l as such, because it is a flexible and easy deformation tissue. Everything depends on the quality of the lip tissue to be compared, and if exist is any reliable parameter for her comparison.
