Do grain boundaries in metal and semiconductor react in similar manner when they are heated/ annealed? I mean the re-crystallization process or new grain growth/nucleation, solid state diffusion etc happen for both cases in similar manner when they are annealed? Is the theory of re-crystallization of metal grains or other phenomenons can be applicable in case of semiconductor grain boundaries?

the diffusion coefficient is thermally activated in semiconductors as well. Please see the publication of F.J. Humphreys and M. Hatherly: Recrystallization and Related Annealing Phenomena http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/book/9780080441641 for metals. As far as I know there is existing electromigration in semiconductors. Thank you very much for your input. Actually I was reading the book you mentioned, by Humphreys and Hatherly on Recystallization and Related Annealing Phenomena which is mainly focused on deformed Metal in coonection with grain and grain boundary and effect of annealing on them. As my research interest at present is polycrystalline semiconductor, where grain and grain boundary play a crucial role in manipulating different optical, physical and electrical properties, I was wondering whether the same re-crystallization and annealing associated phenomenons linked with metal grain and grain boundaries can be applicable or not. Nevertheless, thanks for your reply. Appreciate for attaching the links.

Additional info to your question follows, there is that there is existing a bunch of models in solid state physics which is capable of modelling DRX in silico (see e.g. my PHD research on the RG link bellow). It has a huge potential even in semiconductors. I can add some ideas about modelling of it in semiconductors if you are interested about it (send an email to [email protected]).

There is some literature review in my PhD thesis about experiments and modelling of SRX and DRX. As far as I understand, electromigration has a similar effect on recrystallization as DRX. That is a nice topic for modelling.
