I am supervising an undergraduate student doing a final year research project in statistics. For her project she would like to look at cosmological parameter estimation using Monte Carlo Markov Chains. One problem is finding relevant data that she could use.
Does anybody know of any freely available data that would be suitable for the above-mentioned project?

I would contact a scientist at NASA (www.NASA.gov), or the equivalent agency in any country with a space program. Many of the articles on the NASA site have contact information at the bottom. While your first contact may not be right, I hope they will help get you to the person you need to talk to. There may be a global repository for such data if you know where to look.
You could also search the literature for a paper on the relevant topic and contact the authors. Some may have data that they would be happy to share. I used that approach to getting data from moth surveys. Out of about 10 people I only had one disagreeable encounter.

Dear Niels,
you can try to look for CosmoMC (http://cosmologist.info/cosmomc/). This is a package that use MCMC method and, for example, it is used by the Planck Collaboration to constrain cosmological parameters from the CMB power spectrum. The pipelines are written in Fortran. If your student is more confident with C and Python, then there are available CLASS and Monte Python that she can use.
