More generally, the water quality of countless rivers is compromised by pollution, overabstraction, damming and more. The COP15 decided in Dec. 2022 to protect 30 % of the land to help regenerate severely degraded ecosystems and reign in mass species extinctions. Taking action on river rehabilitation should also have positive repercussions on water quality and the costs of supplying safe drinking water.
