I want to observe plant root development over time, but growing plants in hydroponics suffers from a lack of structural support to root branching and plants grown in sand, which washes away cleanly, still needs some additional support to hold the roots in place. What can I use to hold roots in place as they grow either in hydroponics or in a loose media so I can observe them?

My requirements for a material to support roots are: (1) be minimally obstructive (i.e., thin or transparent) so I can see them; (2) strong enough to support moderately sized root systems without deforming (up to 30 cm across and 90 cm deep); (3) be made of an inert material (i.e., does not react with nutrient solution, produce toxins, or carry significant charge); (4) be cost conscious (I potentially need hundreds of these). Thanks for any suggestions or innovations!
