We found an article that suggests that we can opt to use gel column chromatography as a purification system but we're in doubt for the actual purity it can produce. The dialysis membrane is quite expensive for undergraduate students like us. We hope for suggestions that can assure purity for our doped carbon dots. Thank you everyone!
You can use syringe filter 0.2 micron for removing the larger sized particles.
The key question I think is what are you trying to remove from the carbon dots? Small molecules? Or are you fractionating the dots to select out a particular size range? If it is the latter, the size range of the dots is important. If you choose an appropriate gel filtration medium you should in theory be able to fractionate the particles. Neither dialysis nor gel filtration will allow you to get a narrow size range, but if you are simply removing small molecules then desalting or dialysis is fine. I've not tried either method with carbon dots so please be aware that I am saying it is theoretically possible to use gel filtration. Of some concern would be the free passage of particles through a column, as carbon is usually quite sticky, but it seems there is a precedent from your question.
