Is there a way to statistically compare the trend lines of nominal data using GAMs?

I was just wondering if anyone knows of a way to compare whether there is a significant increase or decrease in a fitted GAM model between factors. I currently have nominal data that is separated over time between three different groups and I want to statistically determine whether they exhibit a similar trend (i.e All decrease etc). Is this possible with a GAM?

Did you ever figure out if there is a way to statistically compare the trend lines of a fitted GAM model? I created two different GAM models and want to 1) determine the overall slope of the trend for GAM1, 2) determine the overall slope of the trend for GAM2, and 3) determine if the trend for GAM1 is statistically different from the slope of the trend for GAM2. Do you have any insight on this?
