I would like to know id there is a possibility of creating named selections (component names) directly in apdl. I have used workbench to create the geometry and apllied initial boundary condition and also created named selections. Then wrote input file (.inp) and read the file on ansys apdl. Here, only the nodes and keypoints are being imported and not the areas or volumes. Therefore , I thought i would create the model directly in apdl, but i don't knoe how to create named selections in apdl. Could someone please help.

take a look at CM and CMSEL. With CM you can group several different active components into selection groups, which later can be selected with CMSEL. Take a look in the ANSYS APDL Command reference for more details.

Every created entity (keypoint, line, area, volume, ......) in Ansys owns an ID number which can be retrieved at a choosen stage in the interactive session or in the batch mode programming session. This is common to the computer aided design softwares or yo the finite element softwares which have a modeling module.

So, does that mean that after importing the model with boundary conditions from Workbench into APDL(using .inp file), the areas and volumes can be replotted in APDL?
Retrieving allows replotting.
Workbench is a module which uses the methods in an interactive session and the same commands are used in batch mode programming. The entities id numbers are available from the list command in the main menu or in an automatic generated Ansys text file (in a folder).

It is possible to get length, surface area and volume (and any other geometry information) exported from "selection information" pan and using Java Script language. You can save these information in tabulated or text format and use it afterward. However, this requires a lot of scripting.
