Colour is a domain in which routine reliance on verbal coding for memory may be expected be cause the same features (hue, lightness, and saturation) are central for both naming and categorization. The problem is to refine and enhance the verbal colour identity text and the answer is to use a systematic colour order model. The “man in the street” can typically recognize about 30 to perhaps 100 named colour identities, but a gamut of about one million visually distinct colour sensations have been shown to exist. Many more of these can be verbally specified with both precision and accuracy using reference material. Thus, colour card collections such as Pantone and the NCS (Natural Colour System) allow unit precision of up to about 5000 colours to be recognised and specified. For a more precise subdivision of the overall colour gamut models defined by numeric codes such as CIELAB are necessary. Such colour identity definitions are based on a substantial set of visual colour match experiments and by worldwide agreement the CIE (Commission Internationale d’Eclaireage) ‘ Standard Observer’ Tristimulus Coordinate model is recognised and used to specify all possible colour identities and to predict all possible visual match combinations.
Clearly, the conceptual colour of any given object may be successfully defined and quantified by means CIE Tristimulus Colorimetric model.
