Stalk-eyed flies are insects of the fly family Diopsidae present in Asia and Africa. Recently I collected samples of an amaizing stalk-eyed fly from Colombia identified as Plagiocephalus latifrons (Diptera: Ulidiidae). I wonder if there is a phylogenetic and evolutionary relationship between Diopsidae from Asia and Africa with Ulidiidae from the Americas.

Ulidiidae and Sepsidae are indeed quite closely related, as you will see in this paper from Wiegmann et al. :

This pattern of head Diptera arose several times independently of the phylogenetic relationship. Even within their own families this pattern arose independently.
