Human problem solving theory has been well explained by Newell et al (1970). However, it is not too recent. Can anybody recommend any literatures that would complement this paper.
Things have moved on a great deal since this excellent paper. One significant development you might like to look at is the way we now think about the nature of problems that this representions. I would suggest you look at Donald Schons excellent books and papers on Reflective Thinking. His first book the Reflective Practitioner is a good place to start. Many of those of us who work on design thinking have come to realise that these theories enable us to understand real cognition by experienced and expert thinkers in quite a new light. This is however no longer news! My own work on Design Theory might interest you and it is all listed here. Particularly How Designers Think and Design Expertise might both help you. In essence we realised some time ago that the Simon notions of problem solving only related to a very specific set of tightly defined problems and therefore only tell part of the story of complex thinking as in designing.
I don't see or read of a new theory. I can, however, feel free to talk about contexts of problems; and the contexts are constantly changing. More changes happen now with globalization and the communications and quick connections of the net. I look for context and never ask Why until I have all the answers to the other questions that describe the context. I have experienced that the description of the context hints the solution to the problems. In the physical world is the same.
My research is focused on computers "mimicking" human processes to solve problems. For example writing algorithms that are human readable and very effective.
The reference mentioned in the question is very similar as the method that has been adopted in hyper-heuristics, in my opinion. I just need more up-to-date resources.
We teach analytical thinking and problem solving. These procedures have their history in the work of Benjamin Bloom (Problem Solving Processes of College Students) from 1946 and refined by Whimbey. Saving our planet, lifting people out of poverty, advancing economic growth... these are one and the same fight. We must connect the dots between climate change, water scarcity, energy shortages, global health, food security and women's empowerment. Solutions to one problem must be solutions for all. - Ban Ki-moon
