Would like to measure PFAS in a cohort of individuals participating in a study of environmental exposure. Commercial lab costs are prohibitively expensive to add this on to a study. How and where are researchers measuring PFAS for research purposes?
Currently, no. This FDA article explains the issue and includes a link to the existing analytical methods. Most analytical chemists could do the analysis with the proper equipment, but that is usually out of the capabilities and budgets of individuals. "Commercial" labs have the best prices for this sort of analysis through high throughput and standardized procedures with trained staff. You might be able to negotiate a better "bulk" rate for a large amount of intended samples. Or, the cost might justify purchasing the necessary equipment and hiring a chemist to operate it for you.
As part of the Veterans Administration you might see if there are other governmental labs that have the capability to run such tests, even if it is not a part of their normal activity.
Thank you! I will look into that. We are doing and intense eval of human subjects and I would love to include this measure but outside our budget. Hoping we could either collaborate with a lab or seek out funding outside of the main study to add this measure.
