I know that in the data assimilation stage in a reanalysis, it will add a moisture increment term to the atmosphere water budget to reconcile with the observations of humidity.
Is there also a heating increment term in the similar manner in reanalyses (I'm particularly interested in ERA-I and the JRA ones, if this is not a universal feature)? If there is, what kind of observations are used to quantify this term?

All variables are subject to modification in the analysis procedure. The question is what vertical level you are interested in. Surface observations are often weighted less heavily than upper air observations especially for temperature because of strong local variability.
@Brian Thanks for replying. I didn't know such a difference in temperature assimilation in surface v.s. upper air. I thought the upper air temperature observation is less reliable than surface so it should be weighted less heaviy instead?
Do reanalysis explicitly close the heat budget by such increments?
