Energy intake is regulated by ingenious physiologic processes involving neurologic and hormonal factors as well as physical activity. When physical activity levels get too low, a demand is also placed on the psychologic control of energy intake. The latter often fails, leading to overweight and obesity which in turn negatively impacts on the physiologic control of energy intake (e.g. leptin resistance). Food is more than just energy intake, we also eat micronutrients and phytochemicals. Do these nutrients in themselves also play a role in food intake regulation? E.g., do low intake levels of micronutrients drive food intake to increase micronutrient intakes (leading to an increased energy intake along the way)? Are there models explaining this? I am looking for answers to this question.
