With laser diffraction I have collected particle size distributions. Some samples are very monodisperse and some are very polydisperse. Is there one general index (like a polydispersity index) that I can calculate from the data to indicate how uniform the particles are in size?

The span is normally used for this as it's a dimensionless measure of the width of the distribution. 2 spans are in common use:
- (x90 - x10)/x50
- (x84 - x16)/x50

You're talking about the PDI in DLS as opposed to a width descriptor in laser diffraction...
