I'm interested in finding out whether there's a chemical (or series of chemicals) that fit the following criteria:
- Decomposition temperature roughly within 50-100 degrees Celsius
- Produces more moles of product gas than moles of reactant solid
- Low toxicity
Does anyone happen to know of any relevant substance or useful database with that information that could point me in the right direction? My method of thermal decomposition will be using a 514.5 nm Argon laser firing at roughly 2.4 W in a beam size of approximately 1 cm.
Any assistance would be appreciated. Thank you!
Ammonium nitrate decomposes thermally to N2O + 2H2O
Also hydrogen peroxide 2H2O2 gives 2H2O + O2
Not really what you are asking, but most low and high explosives generate huge volumes of gas, sometimes via temperature. I think, for example, nitroglycerin is unstable enough to spontaneously deflagrate/detonate at higher temperatures.
Substances like ammonium nitrate and nitroglycerin would be fantastic, however, due to their explosive and unstable nature coupled with the risk of potentially getting on a government watch list for ordering such things, I'm forced to find another route.
There are other substances, such as within the arsenic family that would sublime readily in solid form and would be perfect for such a use, but the toxicity is clearly an issue there.
