There was for decades the idea of Peak Oil. However, even with this specific source of energy, it turned out difficult to see effects of a finite availability. Coal reserves are so huge that there is not really a problem of narrowness, but rather of the negative contribution to climate change in case humans continue to use coal as source of energy for many more years.
Nuclear energy resources are considerable, too. And in principle, there is an unlimited availability of solar energy and wind (also fueld by the sun). The main problem with renewable energy is the fluctuating availability which is at odds with the demands of industrialized countries.
Large capacities for storing energy from renewable sources may be a way out, but present day technology has not yet reached that point.
After all, I do not see that we are running out of energy. Rather, we face the challenge to live without or much fewer fossil sources of energy.
