Someday cars might talk to each other to coordinate traffic patterns. Malikopoulos and collaborators from Boston University recently developed a solution to control and minimize energy consumption in connected and automated vehicles crossing an urban intersection that lacked traffic signals. Then they used software to simulate their results and found that their framework allowed connected and automated vehicles to conserve momentum and fuel while also improving travel time.
Cars without drivers have yet to show reliability. In the future, of course they will certainly bring the abolition of traffic lights as a result.
I don't think so- till the time there are pedestrians and cyclists on the roads, traffic lights would still be there. Driverless cars are only one mode of transportation- there are several other lesser modes (read mortals) who need these basic public infrastructure. Lastly- till there are children in the world who need to be trained in the skill of crossing roads- traffic lights will keep guiding them. The day it stops being so- earth would not be interesting enough to live- so traffic lights or driverless cars won't matter anyway.
In long term(20 year min), of course but next 10 year i don't think so. traffic lights are used by many actors. Pedestrians, cyclists, bikers etc. Even most of autonomous cars todays. Their sensors analyze data coming from the lights.
