I have heard that the capture and selling of Artemia cysts might become prohibited because the species might enter the list of endangered species. Zebrafish facilities would have to adapt. Is this a myth?! Anyone have heard this?
It would seem that alibaba.com it has artemia in big quantities to sell: (https://spanish.alibaba.com/trade/search?SearchText=artemia&selectedTab=products). Incredible.
Not heard anything myself, however, personally I don't think it'll have a huge impact within my facility and many others, I would assume many would turn to paramecia or rotifers and if facilities are not already using paramecia or rotifers they would perhaps see an improvemnt in growth and survival rate of larvae, is an intersting question though.
I am pretty sure most Artemia cysts nowadays are produced by industrial Artemia hatcheries.
However, even if the Artemia supply did fail, they aren't necessary for zebrafish aquaculture. There are formulated zebrafish feeds (e.g. SDS diets) which cover the Artemia size range.
@Carl I have been in contact with some fish facility managers and they are a bit reluctant to turn to rotifers or paramecia nowadays. But yes, if artemia ends, they might.
@Chris, are you sure? I thought they were mostly wild caught.
