I applied the method of Swanepoel for a non-homogeneous film in thickness. The problem is that for some thin films, the experimental spectrum is reproducible, but for others it is not possible, despite the presence of fringe. Can anyone offer an explanation or clarification?
There are two reasons:
1. In case of thin film with not uniform thickness the range of validity of equations of Swanepoel’s method is 0 < Delta(d) < Lambda/4*n (see eq. 13 in R Swanepoel, J. Phys. E: Sci. Instrum., Vol. 17, p. 896). Out of this range Swanepoel’s method is not useful.
2. In some case it is possible to have correlation between Delta(D) and refractive index.
