Unfortunately It seems to me that many people here make silly questions to have many answers and improve your RG score at ResearchGate. I recognize many important questions and discussions here, but in the other hand I also see a lot of junk looking for "likes". I think it isn't the objective of RG. Is the RG just the Facebook of scientists or a useful tool to them?
Hi Luciano, I think RG can be a helpful and useful tool if scientists use RG as a platform for the transfer of knowledge. On the other hand you are right: some use it to get a high RG score. They ask the same question in different topics, ask question that have been asked x-times before and so on. The best way to get rid of this is to downvote such things. An interesting issue raised by you Luciano, I was observing this as well. Though it would be a little unfair to make a general statement and limit it only to the outlined reasons. Some members of the community are genuinely excited, not observing much difference from code of interaction in other social networking interfaces, other are keen to explore and crossing domains and interests spheres. But as Nadine points out, if the intention is knowledge sharing this is still fine and as it goes to other unclear objectives, it should be carefully managed & regulated
High RG score gives a good chance to attract more attention to your research and get more cited, I believe that majority of scentists are here because of that. And its definetely far away from Facebook now, but it may change in a future as network is gaining value.
Its up to the researcher how to utilize RG. For me its really useful because one can get some practical answers in the form of suggestions.
I think RG is a powerful tool to share information and keep in touch with people working in the same topics. I agree with Nadine, We can avoid bad behavior at RG downvoting bad questions used to cheat the system.
To my opinion, research gate has useful properties going beyond a "facebook-like" platform. You might find some background infromation (current/former institute, research interest, etc.) about scientists, e.g. authors of an interesting publication, cooperation partners, or former colleagues. It helps finding literature, too; beeing corresponding author of a book chapter, I have got several requests via RG but none via the e-mail address given in the chapter until now.
