I read the relevant wikipedia page and it seems quite intuitive as a construct, but I know that just because something seems to make sense doesn't make it true.
You ask the following: Is the concept of an addictive personality a myth? It is a myth to a great extent. Why is this so? As I psychologist, I have thw following to say:
1) There are some individuals that, because of their biological inheritance, have some predispositions to be addictive, for example, in alcohol and/or cigarrets consumption.
2) These biological predispositions are only predispositions, that is, they are not necessarily actualized.
3) Personality traits are difficult, if not impossible, to change over one's life span.
4) Addictive people can give up their addictive behaviors with the help of some friends and some forms of psychotherapy
All that said, addictive people are not doomed to being addicitive forever
