I am screening many Lewis acids (BF3.OEt2, TMSOTf, TiCl4, FeCl3,....) but the reactions need to be heated at high temperature (reflux of Toluene or DMF). Will the compounds survive in these high termperatures, or do I have to warm the acid from -78oC to room temperature?
It depends on your substrates. Pls show the structures and I will try to tell you.
Yes, Lewis acids are ok to be used in high temperatures. Our group does this frequently.
the only problem that I can think of is if your molecule has labile groups, e.g. O-benzyl groups, these may not survive and get debenzylation reactions etc.
I need to activate an acrylate ester for a conjugate addition. Since the nucleophile is not reactive, I try to heat the reaction mixture at hight temperature
If you have a good neucleophle with good lewis acid i think there is a reaction occured between catalyst and neuclephile (complexation ) you have to choose soft neuclephile with hard catalyst or hard neucleophile with soft neucleophile
ok , you can activate acrylate ester by addtion of TMSCl (trimethylsilyl chloride)
Note: if you need solvent acetonitrile is the best solvent in conjugate addtion (michael addtion )
if you have liquid phase substrates you can neglect solvent and do neat reaction
