Shakespeare (1516-1564) is considered by many to be out-dated. Those who share this opinion are modernists who think that Shakespeare's plays are thematically irrelevant today as they do not deal with the human experiences in modern times. Do my friends agree with this view?
I do not agree, he spoke about issues that are topical even today, deceit, jealousy, greed and these manifest quite well in African leaders today. If you read the last five plays or Romances as they are called, the subject matter is topical, for my country Lesotho which is a Kingdom, Shakespeare explores issues such as are Kings born or should we elect any thoughtful person? We have principal chiefs who need not be leaders but are because they are born into leadership.

The subjects which Shakespeare describes are timeless - emotions, such as love, jealousy, anger, fear. Ben Jonson noted that he was 'not of an age but for all time', and relevance can be found in Shakespeare's works for any situation in which we find ourselves.
Today, Shakespeare’s plays are interpreted in many different ways. Mostly as allegories of modern times. It is the way that the play is staged that can often change how the audience think and feel about it and about the characters in it.
