There are evidences self citation is found in research articles and treated as unethical. There are cases where the article published previously has information that are relevant to the present one and therefore are quoted with the references. However whether the self cited materials are acceptable /not acceptable in terms of ethical point of view?

For an individual, self-citation is tempting because it can quickly boost scholarly impact and visibility with little effort and no negative consequences.
Sometimes it is kind of marketing and that is normal and needed. Any project needs to be spreader and the authors have their responsibility to do that.
If your new study is continuation of previous one you can cite. Citing every paper which is not relevant is not good.
If you are working on something similar,it cannot be unethical if you cite your previous work.

Generally, to assure an accurate self-citations, it should be used to support the arguments, not to demonstrate your research. Moreover, self-cites may used to compare recent findings of the research with previous results when studying the same theme. The important point here is to avoid turning self-citations into self-promotion.
