Publishing in high impact factor journals is not a true reflection of a scientist's calibre! Research Institutes and Universities demand researchers/professors to publish their research papers in Journals with High Impact Factor as a condition for promotion, while this brings to better promotion/ranking of the Institute/University!

Dear Prof Rao,  I wasn't so aware about impact factor, until I joined RG. Perhaps I'm not the only one. So I asked 3 senior researchers about it. One of them told me that publishing was more important, another said IF is not the primary concern. And the third person said, 'The story of (IF) has been invented by some influential businesses to beat the competitors. I think it is more proper to accept publishing anywhere provided that the journal has decent reputation (even though low IF).'  I think I got good advice, do you agree?

I enterely agree with the statement that the important thing is to try to publish your work in different kinds of journals, even without a high IF. But the question is, is it useful for researchers (specially less experienced) to publish in "not high" IF journals? As institutions (university, research institutes for example) use this qualifications to evaluate your research activity.

I appreciate your inquisitiveness and acumen in seeking advice from your seniors. I am happy you got your answer. Every researcher has dreams and to fulfill those dreams it is necessary that he/she publishes/patents his/her research findings in appropriate fora where the maximum impact is felt (journals, seminars, book chapters, local newspapers or popular magazines etc.). If your research addresses a local or regional problem or issue, publishing in local journals (with or without IF) that have large circulation or is locally popular is the best option. International journals with high IF may not be interested in local issues. If your research is new, has some innovations, interests international readership and you are looking for overseas sponsorship then it is better to publish in a high IF international journal. If you carefully examine journals published in biotechnology, medicine, chemistry etc. have high IF, while journals in agriculture, horticulture have low IF irrespective of the reputation of the publisher. You need to take into account the point raised by Dr. Elizabeth Breininger. At the end, you are your boss and has to decide what is good for you keeping in mind your career.

I totally agree with you that young researchers need to watch their careers progress along with these irritating factors. Many times we do not have any choice but to flow with the flood. Human beings are social beings and have to try to live happily in the society created by themselves.

My research is in Learning, and has some innovations.  I have published in online journals that publish papers mainly from researchers in the ASEAN region, although supposed to be 'international'.  But 1 of my papers was rejected by a journal with IF, based in UK.  Two of my friends told me that however brilliant, we need to publish with an established researcher, and I'm inclined to agree.  I'm thankful that on RG, I can collaborate with experienced researchers.

Yes, collaborating with an experienced researcher sharpens your skills of investigation, communication and presentation and helps to enhance your personality and reputation.

Do not get dejected by rejections. Even the best brains have similar experiences in their youth. Try, Try and Try again until you succeed!

Do not publish in local open access journals that charge money at this juncture.

Thanks for good advice, dear Prof Rao.  I will indeed try to publish in a journal with some IF.  Yes, when my paper was rejected, I gained the benefit of the comments of the reviewers on how to improve it.

A smart and intelligent thing I did and am doing is to focus on my research, restrict my time on Q and A, although I benefit from QA.  But I will get back when I can.  I just put a few posts a day, because I'm on RG to do research, not to 'vote'.  Thanks again for good advice.  I won't give up.

I published on journals with IF higher than 10, but who was aware of it, had been distracted for a moment.
