The Cast iron surface was Laser treated and the Molten region comprising fine dendrite was observed. But I need to check whether the dendrites are actually carbides formed in the Austenite region after the heating and solidification cycle.
Picral, containing picric acid, is usually well suited to visualize carbide distribution in steels. It is also used to display grain boundaries. So in my opinion, I would say yes and you should give it a try.
Unfortunately there is no general answer. The more picric acid you add the faster and stronger is the etching response. You will need to try different concentrations.
