If one is interested in hydrocarbon terpenes then methyl-tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) is highly efficient, but for terpenoid alcohols or aldehydes are better extracted in hexane, pentane, dichloromethane serial extractions. Ethanol, chloroform and diethyl ether are recommended based on their solubility profile. If you are working via successive solvent extraction, then beginning with petroleum ether/hexane is the best way, followed by increasing polarity solvents.
One more thing here i want to add that economic consideration of cost. As in most of the solvent extraction method we have to pay higher charges for cost of some solvent. In that Petroleum ether become choice as it is somehow cheaper in cost then other solvent used for the purpose of isolation of terpenes
