Not so long ago academia was shook by the so-called 'Sokal Squared hoax" whereby fake papers were sent out and passed the review process (see here: https://www.chronicle.com/article/What-the-Grievance/244753?cid=wsinglestory_hp_1)

Is peer review broken? And is open (=not anonymous) peer review the solution?
