Overnight delivery in large cities can be a problem for security reasons and/or because of a clash of interests among actors. For example, carriers prefer night deliveries because the huge traffic during the day, lack of unload areas, etc; while shippers prefer day deliveries to fulfil their customers’ requests. On the other hand, carriers have problem when the deliveries are in unsafe areas. Retailers prefer day deliveries because they would avoid extra costs with wages, for instance. In your opinion, which reasons (positive and negative) to/or not adoption overnight deliveries? Could you suggest me any research?
Moving earth movers to a construction site and building material is best done overnight because of their bulky nature when there is less traffic in city roads. At night so much can be moved for this case than during the day.
Military gear, hardware and troops also moved at night. I have never known the reason why but I have attributed it to security. My 2 cents though.

Indeed our researches have revealed that overnight delivery is a good option for free traffic inside large cities (for instance, Sao Paulo Case), in turn it contribute to better logistics performance of the companies. However, issues like noise, perceived by neighborhood, delivery in unsafe areas, clash of interest among freight operators/retailers, ... are also challenges in urban freight transportation.
I would like to share this concerns and also to get more information about overnight delivery, mainly in large cities. How government and freight operators have dealt with overnight deliveries? Is it always easy and bring advantages for all those actors?

Not considering bulk cargo but the high priority shipments like life saving drugs delivery, priority shipments which has to be delivered next day (as promised to customer) can be considered for over night / express delivery (as UPS calls it). it generally has small pack size and weighs less. As Omni channel commerce is evolving, shippers are trying to fulfill customer orders as soon as possible, even crossing traditional methods of fulfillment. Like Amazon Prime is experimenting with drone deliveries. If you like then you may see Amazon's case study in detail. Hope this shows some light.

I have observed night (early morning) deliveries to be typical in some European cities. If it is 5am, there is still no huge traffic flow and parking problem (like at 7-9 am) and the workers of a shop that opens at 7 am can help to download. But I have to admit that security issue is not a major problem for European cities, while congestion is a problem for many.
