Does anyone know of good papers or research on the long-term consequences of Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome, in particular the development of significant cognitive impairment or dementia? Some info on dementia following a long history of schizophrenia would also be handy!
Iatrogenic CNS toxicity occurs in a dose-dependent manner, often as a result of interference with neurotransmitter function , and also can cause NMS. I think important point is what caused NMS so we can talk about long-term effects.

neuroleptic malignant syndrome can happen in the worst cases only once. if patients survive, we have to check as well the organic situation as well the psychological status of patient, who experiment usually fear and opposition against therapy, especially in the first times of therapeutical process...

In addition to cooling blankets/dantrolene/bromocrtine/amantadine, ECT treats NMS and given urgency of this life-and-death syndrome should whenever possible be available should other treatments NOT reverse hyperthermia and rogidity.
