DO NOT drink this water. During the purification, all minerals were removed from it - it is highly demineralized water. Drinking such water is harmful to health.
I have heard, and in explanation, believe it is harmful to health, because it is so pure, and in drinking, it would dissolve and remove nutrients from the body. I don’t know about the regular drinking of rainwater, it is often low in conductivity, low alkalinity and acidic. Most of us take drinking water quality too much for granted.
Clearly, Milli-Q water can quench one's thirst so why not use it as an alternative to normal drinking water (at least once in a while when you cannot afford to get normal drinking water) Sal Mangiafico
If you are starting with water that isn't safe to drink, the type of treatment or filter that would be appropriate would depend on the contaminant of interest. (Chemical, bacteria, other biological, and so on). I suspect that there would be less expensive methods in many cases, especially on a larger scale, or on a household scale. In the U.S. it is sometimes cheaper to provide bottled water for drinking than trying to deal with treating water for some contaminants.
Apparently drinking distilled or de-ionized water can cause intestinal discomfort for some. But in general, my guess is that it's fine to drink. The lack of minerals in the water probably isn't a major concern as long as the person is eating food.
But not all treatment systems will remove all biological or chemical contaminants.
