The coordinates of M87 are: Right Ascension:12 : 30.8 (h:m) Declination: +12 : 24 (deg:m)

As a consequence, M87 is located in the North Celestial Hemisphere.

According to Shep Doeleman (EHT Director) on behalf of the EHT Collaboration (https://iopscience.iop.org/journal/2041-8205/page/Focus_on_EHT) to produce the first image of a black hole, his team used eight stations, one of them in the South Pole. I doubt that M87 is even visible from this last position. I would appreciate an explanation by a professional astronomer.
