I think patients, especially older people, should be aware of the drug interactions, as they normally need to take more than four medicines for their chronic diseases. An example is the interactions between the prescribed drugs and herbal medicines or other modalities of CAM. However, it is not possible for them to know all information about the drug interactions. They should occasionally consult pharmacists for this issue, e.g. during a medication review. To sum up, their awareness is essential, but the knowledge may be acquired, or the understanding develops, through consultations or counselling. Do not confuse your patients with loads of information.
