It is very rewarding to publish your best papers as book chapters. I have received and read through over 500 chapters. Book chapters are not just review articles. It has its own style. Many don't know this. You don't just publish book chapters for citation purposes or to enrich your publication history. Although a well written book chapter can be highly cited than the review or research articles especially when you publish where it can be seen. Again, you will be held accountable for your book chapter tomorrow than your review and research papers. Beginners are not mean't to start their publication life with book chapters. They may regret tomorrow or even destroy their career when they publish things that eventually their students will make mockery of. Book chapters are not meant for babies. Beginners are meant to acquire experiences first by starting with research and review articles until they become subject experts in that field. They are meant for highly intellectual people, skilled, and very advanced scientists that are meticulous and have an image to protect. I have a lot to say, but I need to go back to my editorial work.
Dear Dr. Dr Manzoor Hussain , Isaac Dinaharan , Antje Cockrill I agree with all of you.
Muzafer H. Saračevic - Selecting between a book chapter or publication in a journal depends on many factors. Research institutions give more weight to refereed journals in most cases, since book chapters are often not subject to blind review. It can take a very long time to get from the initial book proposal to final publication. The review process is less rigorous (this means there is usually no need for major revisions such as rerunning the analysis). And, the review process is often less rigorous, so flaws in the chapter may not be spotted.
However, books and book chapters have their own advantages. Books and book chapters last longer and will be in the university library for decades. Some professors do not allow students to use resources such as journal articles that are more than 5 years old, but do not place the same restriction on books. It is also claimed that books and book chapters receive more citations than journal articles.
More weightage is given to journals than book chapters. Book chapter is usually a compilation of several works similar to a review paper. But the critical analysis of literature will not be intense to that of a review paper. Some do publish their work as book chapter through conferences or directly (Ex: Lecture notes series in Springer publications). A single work can not constitute a book chapter.
I would publish in a peer reviewed journal if you have a choice. Book chapters can take a very long time to get to print, to the point where information is dated, and the review process tends to be less rigorous.

The type of the paper has a role in such decision. I think original research articles preferred to publish in a running journal while narrative and systematic review articles its better to be a book chapter.
