In the vortex model of microworld, special carriers are not necessary for creating nuclei in the field environment and maintaining their stability. All nucleons are spinning vortices. The flow of its own field wraps around each nucleon. The Bernoulli Effect creates a gradient of the normal pressure of the external environment of the field near the nucleon. Nuclear forces are equal to field pressure gradients. The small size of nucleons leads to large pressure gradients and short action of forces. During the formation of nuclei, the trigger principle of interaction takes place. Nucleons do not expend energy on attraction. They only create the conditions for the work of the forces of the electromagnetic field.

I prefer a description in terms of a scalar quantum field, following the basis of a QFT.
For me the nucleons are no more than Baryons (a set of three Quarks which we can picture as a 'bag' of invisible frontiers); groups of Quarks is what Protons, neutrons, pions, etc are.
Inside the atomic nucleus these Baryons interact among them (a different case when we have an isolated neutron or an isolated proton).
In this scenario (atomic nucleus) these particles interact among each other throught virtual Pions: also baryons, but since they are virtual, these particles does n't materialize into existence and they are more a mathematical artefact only used to describe this interaction.
This interaction is what we know as the Residual Strong Nuclear Force
And this exchange of these virtual Pions is what makes two nucleons scatter for instance (what we understand in a classical way as repulsion and attraction)

sadly there is not much else I can say since I just have a general understanding of the general description of the case, I just can picture the case in terms of the approaches we condensed matter physicis use to describe another systems of many particles, with the help of scalar fields.
Your questions seem really interesting, hopefully someone else can step foward on the discussion and contribute with something else.
