Path of Moon orbit is always concave to the Sun. This is well known but not widely understood. The Moon doesn't go backward at any time to circle the Earth. The speeds of Moon and Earth change through a month cycle. When Moon is ahead of Earth in orbit the waxing Moon is moving farther from the Sun. orbit Earth is speeding up a little as Moon gravity pulls on Earth while Moon is slowing down as Earth gravity pulls on Moon.
Other time of month waning Moon is behind Earth in orbit and the Earth is slowing down as the Moon is speeding up and moving closer to the Sun.
