Is it scientific to use conversations in social networking apps (what's app, twitter...) as data? and to what extent? is there some manipulations (statistical or others) before proceeding in their exploitation in research?
In my opinion, they do form a good use case for real life complex networks which can used to test the limitations of your specific approach. However, publishing the data online might not be a good idea (at least in my opinion). Though this is debatable.
I personally worked on social network analysis domain for my master thesis, specifically on sentiment analysis. I used the data, but didnt publish it online (due to privacy issues).
One other idea would be to use synthetic data generators to create complex data based on your requirements. This doesn't involve address the privacy issues and can be published publicity.
