I read lots of papers use SD to show just interconnections and changing variables without time consideration! However, I am not sure, whether it could be reliable or not. Because, as I know the main cause of using SD is assessing variables alterations during the time.
It depends on the goal of the research/application where is given the methodology used. Sometimes time is unimportant but often it is. You can get a better intuition and understanding how it works.
Complex systems and their descriptions have grown substantially since the 50ies. It means, the good idea is to read some overview of what complex systems are and which tools they can employ to describe natural phenomena and technological applications.
For this purpose, there exist a review--see bellow--which covers both: the development and the state-of-the-art of complex systems in the form and shape that is accessible even to non-mathematicians.
When you find it interesting, you can dive into massive parallel descriptions of natural phenomena (many of my research topics are using this approach) and study programs enabling to simulate such systems (there are two open-source codes available at my profile).
After reading the review, you will gain an upper hand above understanding and description of natural phenomena and technological systems expressing complex behaviors.
