I am going to use Sum Frequency Generation (SFG) spectroscopy for analyzing the interface of heavy metals solutions (Hg(II), Pb(II), Ni(II)). However, among all the published papers for SFG, I didn't find any paper for heavy metals. So, does anybody know, is it possible at all to use SFG method for investigating the interface of heavy metals aqueous solutions or not?

In order to get signal for an SFG experiment, the following conditions should be considered:
1) SFG requires an IR and Raman active vibrational transition - would these heavy metal solutions have active vibrations that can be probed by the appropriate wavelength? My guess is that these transitions are far removed and difficult to generate in a typical SFG setup
2) SFG requires orientation and population density - if the species that you are probing do not reside at the interface, you will not get any signal. In addition, if they are not oriented, or are only slightly oriented, the overall signal will be weak.
When probing ion behavior with SFG, many people have had success investigating the solvent changes as a function of the presence of ions (see many papers investigating ions present at air/water interfaces for example). Maybe by probing the solvent directly instead of the metal, you would have better luck.
