I am not sure whether the mixtures recommeded by Jai will work if you will use the rifampicin later in cell culture. Most cells don´t like organic solvents. If you use ethanol keep in mind that not only humans have problems with too much alcohol :-)
I think if you use an alcohol based solvent, that you need to adjust the pH with a bit of NaOH to get the rifamycin to dissolve fully (50mg/ml). Not sure if you'd need to at 10mg/ml. The advantage of using DMSO is that you won't have to adjust the pH to get a high concentration
I think I understand your problem with DMSO. Definitely ethanol is not going to work for you. However, (since I am not fully aware of the type of work your are doing), I may suggest a combination of solvents which might be helpful. Try for example chloroform, methanol mixtures in different ratios or acetone chloroform mixtures in different ratios, etc.
