I am working with undergraduate students in an online mode (due to the COVID-19) instead of in-person as I have in past semesters. A few are having trouble running their samples, which they obtained from the literature. So far when I have shared input files they cannot run them on their laptops. I think it may be because the files references the databases that are resident on my laptop in my download. Any suggestions?

Visual MINTEQ makes use of .NET Framework 4.5 and as such it should run on most Windows platforms, including Windows 7, 8 and 10. Some users of Windows 7 may not have .NET Framework 4.5 or later installed. If this is the case and Visual MINTEQ does not launch, please go to the Microsoft website and download .NET Framework 4.5.
Since Visual MINTEQ interacts with Excel for data import and export, you will need Microsoft Excel 2010 or higher to use these options. Alternatively, there is support for using Visual MINTEQ together with WPS Spreadsheets (this can be changed in the default settings of the program). Maybe some of your students do not have Excel 2010 or higher or may not have .NET Framework 4.5 or later?

Visual MINTEQ should be able to handle the error that occurs when the students have their thermodynamic databases in another folder - a message fires that tells them that their own default databases are read instead. So probably, this is not the problem. Unfortunately there is a range of other possible explanations. It is difficult to guess which one that is correct without more information on what exactly happens on the students' computers (what error message they get, etc). Concerning the possibilities that Paul mentions: if .NET Framework is not installed, the software will not open at all. If Excel is not installed, it is possible to run the program without difficulty, but export to Excel will generate an error message.
