SDI indicates the fouling tendency of membrane. Is there a possibility to relate the TOC of saline water to SDI so as to measure indirectly the fouling tendency of membrane in RO desalination systems? Would like to see any reference related to this concept!
I think that the task is hardly feasible, since SDI is influenced not only by the TOC value, but also by the presence of other suspended and colloidal impurities, which differ in their nature, contents, sizes, and shapes. However, the task is complicated not only by this, but also by the need to understand the quantitative relationship between soluble and insoluble forms of organic carbon.
Many thanks Dr. Vasilii for your great input. Ya I am also thinking in same direction, the complexity involved in the composition of SDI cannot be considered with TOC alone. If there is any equation to relate these two parameters in appropriate manner (approximately), will be good to see?
Generally SDI of seawater is less than 5, maybe total carbon can relate to it rather than TOC alone.
