I am aiming to analyse the natural ventilation for a given buliding. I need to study the air motion inside the building due to the natural ventilation. What are the recommended softwares for this purpose? The building design suggests a wind catcher, are the softwares able to simulate the air motion within the wind catcher and to predict the air velocity.

An scale down version of the building can be simulated in Fluent.
Hi Abdul Hamed Hatem , you could use basically any CFD simulation software for that. Among them: a) ANSYS Fluent CFD, b) ANSYS CFX , b) COMSOL multiphysics program. c) ANSYS Workbench 14.5 version and below which integrates FLOTRAN CFD based on finite elements.
All can be used for analysis and visualization of air flows in and around building models as well as velocity and pressure contours.

Do these softwares allow the user to import the 3D model from REVIT?
Another question, do I need to include the architectural components such as false ceilings, handrails and furniture in the model? In other words, do you believe that these components have an impact on the airflow inside the building?

In Design Modeler of ANSYS Workbench, you can import Revit and other autodesk CAD files in .dwg and .dxf formats apart from IGES, STEP, ACIS and parasolid format.

Syed Mughees Ali : Why just a scale-down of the building? The advantage of CFD is, that without any additional costs you can simulate the real _!_ thing without any scaling effects, i.e. I would recommend, if one goes for CFD simulation than to make a 1:1 model for the CFD simulation and siomulate the real conditions.

Baltazar-Lopez and Abdul Hamed Hatem : You have to be aware, that usually build-in CFD software in CAD systems is not of the same order of accuracy and not to the same degree validated software as the large and standalone CFD software packages like e.g. CFX, Star-CCM+ and Fluent. But of course it depends on the purpose and the desired accuracy of obtained results whether you can go with it or not.

Actually, i though that we can reduce the computation cost by scaling. But yes we can go for full-scale also
Syed Mughees Ali : Actually the computational costs do not depend on the scale or dimension of a model, but just on the number of differential equations which are solved and the number of grid points in the numerical mesh (and timesteps, if a transient solution). So if the full-scale model is resolved with a same order of magnitude numerical mesh, than the computational costs are equal. And the benefit is, that there is no upscaling error in the solution.

Hi,
I have developed a trail 3D model of a small building using Revit then I exported it to Ansys Fluent. I would say that it was not a pleasant experience as the model , for some reason, was disturbed during the export/import process. However, after many tries, I'd managed to import it and accomplished the subsequent meshing. I am still striving with the meshing so that I assume that the mesh was not so sophisticated, but I am happy with it as a beginning.
In the next step, I tuned the setup controls to the desired values and ran the calculation. Although, the convergence was achieved after 30 iteration only ,yet my impression that the computational cost was relatively high. The model which I seek to analyse is obviously far bigger than the trial one so that I am wondering about the requirements of the computer which I must use.
As of now I am aiming to do the following:
1- Analyse the same model using another software to compare the results.
2- Include the terrain. (How can I do that in Ansys)
I will appreciate any further advises in this regard.
