It gots taxonomic key to the genus for all (or nearly) hydrozoans.

To be more precise and go to the species level you'll probably need a key dealing with the species you find at your location but i do not know of one...

If you do not mind removing small pieces of them, you can extract DNA, PCR, and sequence to compare to GenBank. However only works best if there is a large collection of jellyfish sequences to compare to.

I recommend this in case the appearance of the jellyfish has been damaged, however higher concentrations of ethanol are perfect for preserving DNA for years

At a quick search, there are more than 5000 scyphozoan DNA sequences of various gene regions to compare to

Thanks Nicolas! I have had a look at the book, it has quite an extended taxonomic key for hydrozoa.

Thanks Kelsey! I have thought on performing metabarcoding analysis on the samples, as I am interested in having a look at community structure and how it varies through time. Do you know if metabarcoding provides reliable data on community composition for jellyfish?
